Jennifer Holliday (Effie Melody White / Effie Melody White)
was discovered in Houston while still in high school, and ever since her life has been like a modern-day fairy tale come true. She was flown to New York by singer/dancer Jamie Patterson to audition, and just like in the movies, she got the part -- the starring role in Vinnette Carroll's Your Arm's Too Short To Box With God.
She toured nationally for a year and a half with the company and made her debut on Broadway with the same company in July, 1980. Jennifer, a Libra, born October 19, 1960, believes that the opportunity to share her gift with the world is worth its weight in 24K gold.
Jennifer has been very active in recordings and concert appearances. Battling depression because of her weight, she attempted suicide but regained her spirit, losing almost 200 lbs. In the 90s, she appeared on Broadway as the Teen Angel in the revival of Grease and as Matron Mama Morton in the revival of Chicago. Jennifer also wrote a one-woman off-Broadway show: Downhearted Blues: The Life and Songs of Bessie Smith. She has also had numerous guest appearances on television ("Ally McBeal," "Ellen," and "Touched By An Angel").
