Jennifer Holliday publicly stated that she intended to return to the role of Effie in a high-profile production in the summer of 2001. DREAMGIRLS was produced as part of the National Black Arts Festival with Theatre of the Stars at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia from July 19 through July 27, 2002.
